Fuel Operated Heaters

Installing pollution control equipment is just one way Project Green Fleet works to reduce emissions. Reducing the amount of time a diesel engine idles also helps to keep our air clean.

Recently, Project Green Fleet and our equipment vendors have worked to install fuel operated heaters on Minnesota school buses. Below are a few photos of our partners.

Why Fuel Operated Heaters?

Fuel operated heaters provide the following benefits:

  • Reduces unnecessary idling
  • Reduces fuel consumption
  • Provides supplemental heat for drivers and passengers
  • Window defrosting and defogging

The heaters work by running on a tiny amount of diesel fuel to heat the engine coolant. A small pump circulates coolant through the engine block and depending on the model, radiators in the bus cabin. This prevents the bus driver from having to run the school bus at idle for long periods of time, which burns up to half a gallon of fuel per hour. Fuel operated heaters burns only a few cups of fuel an hour and prevents unnecessary mechanical wear on the engine.

Equipment vendor brochures with more information about the technology are available by clicking here.
